Who We Are:
Green Plate Special’s mission is to inspire and empower youth to experience food in new ways through gardening, cooking and eating together. Green Plate Special is Seattle’s only middle-school specific, curriculum-based program combining food growing with cooking.
What We Do:
Green Plate Special engages middle-school youth (ages 10 – 14) in the self-sufficiency skills of growing, cooking, and eating nutritious, flavorful food. Through hands-on in-class, after-school, and summer camp programs, we teach practical life skills to empower youth to engage with nature, get their hands in the earth, and to enjoy eating healthy foods.
Founded in 2011 by Chef Laura Dewell, Green Plate Special’s first garden was located in Seattle’s Central District, where we transformed a derelict, vacant lot into a youth-focused food garden. When the property owner made plans to develop our original garden lot, we moved further south, to a permanent location. This new location features raised beds, a greenhouse, garden shed and wood-fired pizza oven as part of our outdoor classroom, and a new teaching kitchen for indoor learning. During after-school and summer camp programs, youth plant, harvest, cook, and eat, and put their special touch on our garden and kitchen.
